In recent years, Vietnamese cinema has been making an impressive entrance into the U.S. market, with a wave of films that showcase the country’s unique culture, breathtaking landscapes, and compelling storytelling. As international audiences become more receptive to diverse narratives, Vietnamese films are finding their place on major streaming platforms and in prestigious film festivals. Two recent standouts leading this cultural surge are Netflix’s “A Tourist’s Guide to Love” starring Scott Ly and the Sundance-winning film “The Accidental Getaway Driver” featuring Dustin Nguyen.

“A Tourist’s Guide to Love,” released on Netflix in 2023, is a romantic comedy that takes viewers on a journey through the vibrant streets and picturesque countryside of Vietnam. Starring Scott Ly alongside Rachael Leigh Cook, the film tells the story of an American travel executive who embarks on an undercover assignment in Vietnam after a painful breakup — only to find unexpected love and adventure. What makes this film particularly captivating is how it uses Vietnam not just as a backdrop, but as an essential character. The lush visuals of Hoi An’s lantern-lit streets, the majestic scenery of Ha Giang’s limestone peaks, and the bustling energy of Ho Chi Minh City create a rich, immersive experience. Scott Ly’s charm and natural chemistry with Cook add to the film’s lighthearted appeal, but it’s the authentic portrayal of Vietnamese culture — from local customs to the warmth of its people — that truly steals the show.

On a very different note, “The Accidental Getaway Driver” takes a more intense and introspective approach, offering a gripping story inspired by true events. Directed by Vietnamese-American filmmaker Sing J. Lee, this crime thriller made waves at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, winning the Best Director award in the U.S. Dramatic category. The film stars veteran actor Dustin Nguyen, whose performance as Long, an elderly Vietnamese cab driver, is nothing short of remarkable. Long’s quiet night takes a dangerous turn when he unwittingly picks up three escaped convicts, leading to a tense and emotional hostage situation. The film explores themes of isolation, survival, and unexpected human connection, all while providing a rare, nuanced portrayal of the Vietnamese immigrant experience in America. Nguyen’s layered, heartfelt performance brings depth to a character caught between fear and empathy, and the film’s atmospheric tension keeps audiences on edge from start to finish.

It doesn't stop at romance and action, U.S audiences are soon to get a chance of experiencing the thriller & horror. Vietnamese horror movies are also making their mark on the global stage, adding a fresh twist to the genre with their cultural depth and eerie storytelling. Films like “The Corpse” (Quỷ Nhập Tràng) produced by famous Director Nhat Trung has gained international attention for their unique blend of historical drama and super-cultural horror. This is also the FIRST VIET MOVIE EVER having a World Premiere Tour from February 18th opening in America, Taiwan, Australia, Korea and close in Vietnam on March 5th; and also the first Vietnamese Film is featured in 4DX.

Movie lovers who have interests in Asian culture and the art of telling stories through pictures, will be assured to get authenticity and charisma from the lead actors, while their films demonstrate the versatility of Vietnamese cinema, from feel good romance to hard-hitting drama and spine-chilling horror.
