A scene from Victory featuring Lee Hye-ri passionately leading a cheerleading practice, capturing the film's spirit of ambition, friendship, and determination.

Last summer, the New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) 2024 opened with Park Beom-su’s Victory, a film distributed in the U.S. by 213 P&M. As the festival's opening night selection, Victory captivated audiences with its charm, humor, and heartfelt storytelling, earning its place as one of the standout films of the year.

A Story of Friendship and Ambition

Set in 1999, Victory follows two best friends, played by Lee Hye-ri and Park Se-wan, in a small South Korean town. Dreaming of escaping to Seoul, the girls channel their frustrations into forming a cheerleading club to support their struggling school soccer team. What starts as a lighthearted endeavor evolves into a powerful story of friendship, teamwork, and self-discovery.

The film’s opening sequence, where the girls dominate a pair of “Dance Dance Revolution” machines, introduces their tenacity and sets the stage for an emotional journey. With the arrival of a transfer student (played by K-pop star Jo A-Ram), the trio’s dynamic crackles with energy, offering moments of humor and poignancy that resonate with audiences.

Why Victory Stands Out

Critics have likened Victory to a grounded version of Bring It On, but its unique ability to blend nostalgia with emotional depth makes it a standout. The chemistry between the cast, coupled with its heartfelt narrative, delivers a feel-good experience that stays with viewers.

NYAFF and Victory: A Perfect Match

Victory exemplifies NYAFF’s mission to spotlight exceptional Asian cinema. Its Sergio Leone-inspired opening scene and spirited story reflect the festival’s commitment to showcasing diverse and engaging stories.

NYAFF’s Stellar Lineup

In addition to Victory, NYAFF 2024 presented other must-see films, including:

  • Pattaya Heat (dir. Yang Shupeng)

  • Let’s Go Karaoke! (dir. Nobuhiro Yamashita)

  • Granny Prostitutes (dir. Joel Lamangan)

  • All Shall Be Well (dir. Ray Yeung)

As Victory continues to captivate U.S. audiences, 213 P&M is proud to have played a role in bringing this heartfelt tale to American screens.
