Alamo Drafthouse, the popular dine-in theater chain known for its diverse slate and immersive cinema experience, has announced layoffs affecting both corporate and hourly employees.

The decision, attributed to seasonal box office slowdowns and internal restructuring, comes seven months after Sony Pictures Entertainment acquired the Austin-based company. Alamo operates 35 cinemas across 25 metro areas and welcomes over 10 million guests annually.

On the corporate side, 9% of staff were let go to improve operational efficiency. At the store level, layoffs included seasonal part-timers, though reports suggest larger-scale impacts, with some locations letting go of up to 30 employees.

Despite these challenges, Alamo highlighted its strong 2024 performance compared to industry peers and its ongoing expansion, including two new locations in San Francisco. While the first quarter of 2025 is expected to lack major blockbusters, the summer lineup promises hits like Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning and How to Train Your Dragon.

Sony's acquisition of Alamo in July marked the first Hollywood studio ownership of a theater chain in over 75 years. This move followed Alamo's 2021 Chapter 11 bankruptcy during the pandemic. Founded in 1997 by Tim and Karrie League, Alamo has grown into North America’s seventh-largest theater chain, beloved for its unique programming and commitment to the cinematic experience.
