Korea Box Office Sees Big Weekend: <Dark Nuns> Takes Top Spot

The Korean box office came roaring back this weekend (Jan. 24–26), led by a strong debut from new horror film <Dark Nuns>. Check out our quick rundown of the weekend’s top performances—and stay tuned for more industry updates from 213 P&M.


1. <Dark Nuns> Scares Its Way to #1

  • Earnings: KRW5.71 billion ($3.9 million)

  • Market Share: 42.8% with 588,498 admissions

  • A horror story centered on two nuns performing an exorcism, <Dark Nuns> claimed the top spot with impressive numbers.


2. <Hitman 2> Shoots for Second

  • Earnings: $2.8 million

  • Market Share: 30.3% with 425,198 admissions

  • This action-comedy sequel launched to a solid start, securing a comfortable second place.


3. <Harbin> Slips from the Top

  • Earnings (Weekend): $495,464

  • Cumulative Total: $30.9 million

  • After weeks at #1, this historical thriller dropped to third but remains a major box-office success.


Other Notable Releases

  • Pokémon the Movie AG: Mew and the Wave Hero Lucario (#4): $285,445 over the weekend

  • IU Concert: The Winning (#5): $542,261 with 28,063 admissions

  • “The Substance” slid to sixth, and new comedy “Ghost Police” debuted at seventh.

  • “Pororo the Movie: Great Adventure Under the Sea,” “Crayon Shin-chan the Movie: Our Dinosaur Diary,” and “The Firefighters” rounded out the top ten.


Total Weekend Gross

According to Kobis (Korean Film Council), the top 10 films grossed about $8.6 million, a sizable bump from last week’s $5 million—an encouraging sign as January wraps up and the Lunar New Year celebrations begin.
